A Survival Guide to Xtreme Triathlons

A BRIEF LOOK INTO XTREME TRIATHLONS

Back in 2003, a group of Norwegians began a new branch of Long Distance Triathlons. The First Edition of Norseman Extreme Triathlon was held with just 21 crazy participants, who not only refreshed the Ironman Distance, but also started a new worldwide movement. The hardest Ironman distance race on the planet is now known for its beauty, tough conditions, and unique racing experience.

Today, Xtreme triathlon races are a global franchise. Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Canada, Sweden, Italy, Spain and Chile. All promising to give athletes the ultimate experience.

In a few words, Xtri is triathlon back to its roots. Swimming in cold water, biking over steep hills, and running on trails or climbing mountains. Wind, rain and fog, are just a few of the conditions that affect the journey. But these races are unique not only because they are tough, but also because they require special logistics.

THE REGISTRATION PROCESS

Only 250 to 300 athletes will be on the start line on race day. If you want to be one of them, you first need to enter a lottery. Races like Norseman and Swissman have a very high enrolment demand, so it is very hard to acquire a slot. E.g. every year, more than 3000 people register for the Norseman Lottery. The chances of getting a slot are very low, and if you do get one, you have a very limited time to pay for the final registration.

SUPPORT CREW

Minimum support is given on race day by the organization. So, it is mandatory to have a personal support team to accompany you during the race. They will be in charge of providing nutrition, safety, and encouragement throughout the day. This is one of the key components that gives Xtreme races their unique signature.

RACE MANUAL

These events are exclusive and have special rules. All of them have a Race Manual which provides essential information on equipment, safety, course description, and rules for both athlete and support crew. Before entering the lottery, be sure to read the race manual to really get a grasp of what you might be getting yourself (and your crew) into.

TRAINING AND PREPARATION

Most of these events require swimming in cold waters. Getting used to cold temperatures takes special physical and mental training. Gear selection will also be crucial. Equally challengining are the elevation gains for the bike and run legs. It will be advisable in some races to use a road bike instead of a TT bike. Either way, strong legs will be needed. A good, custom, training program that reinforces solid strength work is a must. As a tip, be sure to start running on hills and trails early in order to prepare.

BEYOND PERFORMANCE

Yes, it’s a race, but the primary goal here is crossing the finish line. Natural forces will work with you or against you and you should be prepared for both cases. Accomplishing one of these races gives the Finisher Shirt a whole new special meaning.

Extreme triathlons will take you to remote places in the world.  Places where the beauty of raw nature will add an extra value to the whole experience. I guarantee you will leave with unforgettable memories.

With all that said, take a good, deep breath and sign up!
